For eight years of my life, I was a pharmaceutical sales rep.  I was very fortunate in that the drugs made by the company I worked for were effective at treating certain illnesses.  I didn’t find it hard to tell physicians the benefits of prescribing these drugs.  However, one thing I learned was that people were often slow to change habits or behaviors.  My job as a sales rep was to spot all the objections to the company products and address them.  Essentially, I had to try to bring the physicians to a mind-space where they were ready to change what they were doing.

Scripture is full of stories that illustrate this concept.  The most dramatic of these is the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt.  Pharaoh took a long time to be ready to change.  He watched his people suffer through plagues, each one more difficult than the last.  This went on until all the first-born children were killed.  When that happened, Pharaoh was finally ready to let the Israelites go.

At University my friends and I often argued into the wee hours of the morning about God, and I was not at all ready to listen.  In my third year of University, I was injured and temporarily lost my eyesight.  The doctor was honest with me and told me he wasn’t sure that he was going to be able to repair all the damage.  I had come to the end of my rope and I prayed “Lord if you are real, I need you now.”  I was finally ready to be open to God’s love. 

This brings me back to the story of the banquet in Luke 14:15-24.  Those who were originally invited made excuses as to why they couldn’t attend, they weren’t ready to come and didn’t feel the need.  By contrast, in that parable, those living with disabilities were ready.
